I love this show. My husband is stunned I'm watching something on public television but truly, Downton Abbey is the best. show. EVER.

My favorite character? I love so many of them but I think the dowager duchess takes it. She has the best lines. So far this is my favorite line of hers from this season:
"Edith, you're a lady. Not Toad of Toad Hall." -- Priceless

Henry Cavill, you look mighty fine standing on top of a building. You're reminding me of my current hero, Hunter Worth. He looks just as good as you do in a suit and tie. He's rather powerful. He might even stand around on top of buildings, contemplating life and that frustrating woman he works with. She's giving him fits and he doesn't like it one bit.

In fact, she's giving me fits as well. I'm almost done with this book and yet...she refuses to cooperate. Well, I'm the one who refuses to cooperate when it comes to Gracie since I created her but jeez. You think I'd stop torturing myself.

Wow, I sound like a crazy writer, don't I? This is what happens when you see the light as at the end of the deadline tunnel yet it still feels so, so far away. You start to lose it.

Wait, I think I already lost it.

Don't Disturb

See the guy in that pic? Yeah, that's me. Though I'm really hunched over a laptop typing furiously. I'm on deadline which means I need to hunker down and get stuff done. Books are due! Proposals! Edits! Oh my word, it is a busy, busy time at the Erickson household.

So off I go to finish up this book, work on those edits, fiddle with that proposal. All of it will benefit you, my lovely readers, because it means more stories are headed your way...

I will be stopping by the Facebook page and sending out the occasional tweet so bug me there if you want. Harass me even and ask how that book/proposal/edits are coming along. That'll set a fire under my behind...

Tumblr Inspiration

I've been busy this past week - writing heavily on one project and pondering another. I've needed inspiration for both projects and let me tell you, my absolute favorite place to go for it is Tumblr.

Oh, me. Oh, my. There are so many beautiful, lovely, gorgeous photos on Tumblr. And funny ones. And sexy ones. And really, really naughty ones (if you're looking for free pr0n, you can definitely find it on Tumblr), too.

When I started working on the first Worth It book, I found a lot of jet set, glamorous photos that inspired me. They helped me imagine the European settings I took my characters to and when I was trying to describe the private jet Alex and Tessa traveled on, well, I looked no further than a Tumblr photo for help! Ah, if only I could find that photo, I'd share it with you...

The secret project I'm pondering/working on has a fairy tale quality to it. Gowns, winter, snow, castles, England...those are objects I'm looking at for inspiration. New Year New Goals

Ah, a new year. Such fresh and mysterious possibilities stretch out before us. What will happen to us in 2012? I have a feeling this will be a good year for many. We need that positive turnaround considering how tough it's been the last few years...

I've fallen into my "I'm gonna get organized!" habit that comes over me every time at the dawn of a new year. In fact, I already bought that 2012 planner and added some items to it last night. Let's see how long I last (oh, I'm the worst. Pretty shiny organizers make me so happy and I buy them but rarely use them. Shame on me.).

I don't do resolutions, I believe they're a set up for failure. Who needs that? I like having goals but rarely do I make them concrete. Rarely do I write them down and say, "I want to do______this year". So I've been pondering my goals for 2012 and though I'm not quite ready to write them down yet, I hope to share them with you in the next day or two.

Are you a resolution type? Or do you prefer setting goals? Or maybe you don't do any of it, which is fine. I've been part of that camp most of my life...

I'm taking a break for the new few days. To hang out with the family, enjoy our Christmas presents and catch up on some reading. I haven't read much these last few weeks, too busy! I need to relax (don't we all?) after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

As I reflect on this year as it comes to a close, I want you, my dear readers, to know how blessed I am to have each and every one of you in my life. Your emails and comments and reviews are what keep me going. I'm launching a couple of new series this upcoming year and hopefully, you'll enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.

So I'm wishing you all a safe and Happy New Year a little early. 2011 was a great year but I'm ready for 2012. May it bring us all health, happiness and fortune!

Claire’s head hurt so bad she could barely open her eyes. She tried to, but her eyelids were so heavy she gave up, a low moan escaping her lips. Her temples throbbed and she felt so tired. All she wanted to do was go back to sleep.

Warm, slightly calloused fingers suddenly brushed against her forehead, soothing in their touch, and her low, agonized moan turned into a soft sigh.

“Are you all right, sweetheart?”

At the sound of the deliciously deep male voice her eyes flew open to find an eerily familiar handsome face looking down at her, his dark brown eyes filled with concern. A lock of black hair fell over his forehead and his full lips were parted, his tongue sneaking out to lick at them. Her panties grew wet at the sight of it.

How had this handsome man gotten into her apartment? She knew the door was locked, there would be no way he could get in unless he’d chopped it down with an ax. She sniffed the air but didn’t smell any smoke. Oh gosh, she hoped it wasn’t the fire department. They would probably do something like that to rescue her, right?

But why would she need rescuing? There was no fire…

Unless she counted the banked heat glowing in the strange man’s gaze. And the tiny flame flickered within her at the sight of him.

He must have noticed, because he grabbed her by the shoulders and gave her a little shake. The imprint of his fingers upon her flesh sent a jolt of awareness shivering through her. “Oh, no you don’t. Wake up, sweetheart.”

Claire opened her eyes, looking around, trying to figure out where she was. No, this was definitely not her apartment. It looked more like a one-room log cabin, with a giant fire roaring in the river-rock fireplace and a few oversized wooden chairs with fluffy red checked cushions sitting close to the fire. No couches, no kitchen, no television. Very rustic.

She glanced around, then down at herself. She was in a bed, a very large bed that dominated the entire space. With a soft little cry she lifted the covers and saw she only wore her bra and panties. Her sweat pants and T-shirt had disappeared. How the hell had that happened? Did this man take off her clothes or what?

“Your clothes were damp when I found you,” the man said in explanation as if he could read her mind. “I figured you must have been out in the snow for a while. I was outside in the back gathering wood for the fire when I found you. I put you in my bed to keep you warm.”

“Who are you?” Claire asked again, eyeing him. She liked how he said ‘my bed’. It conjured up all sorts of images. And really, why was he so familiar? There was something about the tilt of his chin, the sharp slash of his cheekbones. Ooh, and his mouth. All that attractive masculinity was softened by his full, lush mouth. A mouth she couldn’t help but wonder what it would feel like, kissing him.

He truly was the most handsome man she’d ever seen.

“I’m whatever you wish me to be.”

“Don’t tell me you’re having second thoughts.” He smiled and scratched his bare chest. Gooseflesh covered his skin, and she knew he was cold clad in only navy blue swim trunks.

“Miss Fairington? Are you all right?”

His brows furrowed with concern, his knuckles white as he clutched the clipboard. She must look like an idiot clad in a ridiculous gown and staring at him with such longing. Her best bet would be to pretend it was the pain making her loony, not him.

She rubbed her backside again, still clutching the front of the gown with her other hand. “I’m just in pain, Doctor.”

“Please, call me Tim.” He set the clipboard on the counter behind him and then rested his hands on his hips. “Why don’t you hop up onto the table while I check your vitals?”

“My vitals?” She had no idea to what he referred. She’d never been to the doctor’s office, never had a reason. Spells took care of her ailments, and those were so few and far between she rarely had to worry about it.

He looked at her as if she were crazy. “You know, listen to your heartbeat, take your blood pressure, the usual routine.”

“Oh.” Lily nodded, pretending she knew exactly what he was talking about. Ha. “Yes, my vitals.”

She hopped onto the table, her fingers cramping from holding tight to the front of her gown, but she refused to let go. Now that she had him so close, she didn’t want him to see her nearly naked form. It all made her too nervous.

Tim grabbed a funny looking gadget and flicked the tiny switch on the side, flashing a beam of light into each of her eyes. “Pupils look good.”

He then picked up a wooden stick and instructed her to open her mouth. “Say aah.”

“Aah.” Oh my gosh, that stick tasted awful! She nearly gagged, and he removed it quickly.

“Sorry.” He smiled at her, and her body went all fluttery inside. He had the nicest smile she’d ever seen. “Now I need to listen to your heartbeat.”

She noticed the strange looking apparatus around his neck, watched him spread it wide and place the ends of the curved pieces in his ears. He held up the other end, and his hand went toward her chest. She stared down at it, then glanced back up at him. What did he want to do with that?

“Miss Fairington, I need you to let go of the gown so I can listen to your heart.” He spoke to her low and gentle, as if she were a fussy child.

So why did it send fissures of excitement along her nerve endings? Goodness, he had a pleasant sounding voice.

Lily released the front of the gown reluctantly, letting it hang open. She heard his sharp intake of breath, and she glanced up at him. A strange sparkle lit in his deep blue eyes. He pressed the silver round thing to her chest, and she jumped.

“Cold,” she explained, when his eyes met hers.

He stood there silent while he held the apparatus to her chest, seeming to listen with the things in his ears. He finally removed the round metal object, rubbing his hand over it. “Sorry. I normally warm it with my hands first, but I must’ve…forgotten.”

“It’s all right. How does my heart sound?”

“Excuse me?” His gaze met hers, and she realized he’d been staring at her chest. Her pink bra-clad chest.

“My heart. Is it okay?”

“It’s fine. Beats a little faster than average, but still in the normal range.”

He took her blood pressure with a weird thing that wrapped around her arm and kind of hurt, and peeked into her ears and numerous other little things. She wondered what all of this had to do with her sore backside. None of it made any sense to her, and all of it seemed like a giant waste of time.

“Why don’t you stand up and turn around so I can look at your back,” he finally suggested.

She did so, presenting her back to him, but he did nothing, just stood there, waiting for her.

“Miss Fairington? I need you to take off your, um, gown.”

Oh, my. Well, if he wanted her to do that…

Lily shrugged her shoulders and let the gown fall into a puddle at her feet. Her stomach quivered with anticipation, and then his big, warm hands touched her, really touched her for the first time.

She closed her eyes when those broad palms brushed over her lower back, firm fingers gently pressing into her skin. “Does it hurt here?” he murmured.

“No.” She shook her head, waves of pleasure washing over her. A tingling started low in her belly, landing somewhere in the vicinity between her thighs, and she clutched her legs together. She’d certainly never felt that before.

His hands moved lower, brushing against the waistband of her panties. “How about here?”

“Not really.” Lily closed her eyes, shocked by the wetness that grew between her legs. Her entire body felt different, and her breath came in short pants. Oh, goodness, she had a strong feeling she was aroused. No wonder mortals went on and on about this stuff…

Thick fingers curled around the waistband of her panties and slid them down halfway, revealing her bare backside to him, and she felt her face flush with embarrassment.

“You have some pretty bad bruises here.” Fingers skimmed her bottom cheeks, and she very nearly stumbled. Thank goodness the table was pressed against her front, or she would’ve fallen to the floor in a heap with the gown.

“I’m sorry, did I hurt you?” Her panties were pulled back up over her derriere, and then the warm fingers were gone. She didn’t know whether to sigh with relief or beg him to touch her again.

“No, you didn’t hurt me. Just startled me.” She glanced over her shoulder, his gaze met hers, and she saw it again. A particular sparkle in his eyes that spoke to something deep inside her. Something womanly and feminine and powerful. She had a strong feeling it was interest.

As if he might be interested in her.

I wanted to stay true and keep it full of tension and scariness but I am, after all, a romance writer so I do believe in my happily ever after. I really adored my hero Russ. He's military, strong and protective, thoughtful and sweet. Oh yes, and sexy. Mmm, hmm. Here's a quick little excerpt to prove it (Warning: ADULT):

“Baby, you know exactly what you’re doing,” he said with a lazy smile just before his eyes slid closed.

She didn’t answer, merely watched him as they moved together. He was so gorgeous, so strong and those big, capable hands held her firm and steady. A wave of sadness suddenly threatened to wash over her.

Why couldn’t she have met him months ago, years ago? Why did it have to be now, when their entire world was crumbling apart, when it felt like they were the only ones left? Being chased by aliens, for the love of God, or whatever the hell they were.

Why, why, why, she wanted to ask. Shake her fist and demand answers that she knew didn’t exist.

But she didn’t know who to ask. Didn’t know who was responsible.

“Hey.” His eyes flew open, as if he sensed her sadness and he reached for her face, cupping her cheek with his palm. “Come here.”

She bent, their mouths meeting, tongues tangling, soft and sweet and she wanted to cry.

“It’s gonna be okay,” he whispered against her mouth, their bodies stilling. “I’ve got you. We’ve got this together.”

A tear trickled down her cheek and plopped onto his face and he drew away from her, his fingers skittering across her face, catching a few stray tears. “I’m scared,” she whispered.

“I’m scared, too,” he confessed and she knew he spoke the truth. He was a badass like she’d never seen before but this was scary shit, what was happening to them. “As long as we stick together, we’ll be all right.”

“Do you really believe that?”

He licked his lips and breathed deep, his chest expanding. His gaze cut away from hers for a brief moment, and she touched his face, turning his head so his eyes met hers once more. “Do you?” she asked again.

“I don’t know.”

At least he was honest. She had to give him that.

“What should we do?” Her voice trembled and she couldn’t believe they were having this serious, frightening conversation while he was still inside her.

“Well.” He lifted his hips, sending himself deeper and a little whimper escaped her. “We should finish this. Then we should get dressed and get out of here.”

“And go where?”

“We’ll figure that out when we get to that point, sweetheart. Now let’s snatch these few stolen moments before…”

Before they had no more stolen moments whatsoever.

Thanks so much to Karen for having me on the blog today! (And congratulations to her on her recently released historical romance!) I’m so happy to be here today in continued celebration of my latest release, ROMANCING THE COUNTESS.

The other day a fellow author friend and I were talking about how we first fell in love with romance novels. Our discussion turned to movies—don’t ask me how, but it did =) –and how much people enjoy romantic comedies, and yet some of those same moviegoers turn their noses up at romance novels.

Now, if you made ROMANCING THE COUNTESS into a movie, it would not be a romantic comedy. Although there are a few humorous moments in the book, the story is more focused on how each character deals with the betrayal and death of their respective spouses and how they fall in love with each other as they move on with their lives.

However, I am a huge fan of romantic comedies, and after our discussion I began thinking about why there seems to be a distance between the world of romance novels and romantic comedies.

First, let’s look at the surface. Most romantic comedies have fun, flirty titles. Two of my favorites are 27 Dresses and When Harry Met Sally. In my mind, these titles don’t focus on sexiness or sex. They focus on something that either involves the heroine directly or the relationship between the two protagonists. I’ve started to notice that some romance titles are drifting toward either variations of famous movie titles (WHEN HARRY MET MOLLY by Kieran Kramer) or titles that focus more on the relationship than sexiness/sex (TEN WAYS TO BE ADORED WHEN LANDING A LORD by Sarah MacLean). In comparison, here are a few examples that feature sexiness/sex: SEDUCING THE DUCHESS (my debut); SEX AND THE SINGLE EARL (Vanessa Kelly); A WEEK TO BE WICKED (Tessa Dare). The list could go on and on.

In addition to the title, there are the movie posters versus the cover art. For 27 Dresses, only the heroine is featured—and yes, in a dress (this correlation between the story content, title, and cover is something more romances need, in my opinion). For When Harry Met Sally, we see the hero and the heroine on the cover facing each other—it could be as if they’d just met, but they’re certainly not wrapped in a torrid embrace.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love my sexy romance covers and I’m drawn to titles with the words WICKED or SIN in them. And I know that some people have claimed that covers and outrageous titles make them glad that they have ebooks, while others are proud to show off their sexy romances to everyone. But when it comes down to it, I feel bad for people who probably WOULD love romances if they gave them a chance but don’t because of the issues I’ve just addressed. However, part of me wonders whether it would even be worth trying to attract a wider audience with not-so-sexy titles and covers, because hardcore romance readers (such as myself) seem to enjoy the outside packaging. This begs the question: do we try to lure current non-romance readers in with the packaging, or do we continue with the packaging that current romance fans buy like to buy? And DO the majority of current romance fans really like this packaging, or is it something that only some prefer, while others wish it was different?

Another thought that I had along these lines was to look at the covers of the major bestselling historical romance authors (those who are hitting my target readers): Julia Quinn and Lisa Kleypas. Julia writes lighter and Lisa

writes sexier. Yet, if I look at their backlist covers, the majority of their covers show either 1) women by themselves; 2) landscape covers; 3) or item covers (flowers, letters, etc.). I can’t help but wonder if part of what helped them get noticed by such a large audience was that these covers weren’t focused on sexiness or sex, so it appealed to a wider audience.

Once we get past the packaging, there’s the content. I can’t speak for everyone, of course, but I know that I love to watch romantic comedies because 1) there’s always a happy ending; 2) I love the rush of falling in love with the characters, of seeing how they get there, what their conflicts are, and believing that they’ll have their HEA; and 3) because I like to laugh. #1 and #2 above are obvious things that are included in romance novels, too. While #3 may not be as prevalent in romance novels, for me as a writer humor is just as important in romances as they are in romantic comedies, and I am not usually a “light” writer.

There’s usually sex in romantic comedies—sometimes the bedroom door closes and sometimes we’re let in, as is the case with different romance novels. Of course, there are a few other possibilities to consider:

Not everyone likes to read (gah, I know!)

Going out to a movie is something you can share at the same time with someone else and is usually a special occasion; not so with books

A movie only lasts about 2 hours; unless you’re a really fast reader, reading a romance novel usually takes up much more time

However, we have to suppose that some of the people who enjoy romantic comedies and don’t read romances are also people who do read and enjoy other kinds of novels. Therefore, the question is: What is keeping these people from converting to becoming lovers of romance novels?

I have a plan to test this someday by arranging to give away books at a theater as people come out from a romantic comedy, but until then, why do you think people who love romantic comedies may not like/read romance novels? If you came to the romance genre as an adult, why did you stay away first, and what made you finally try them?

My Favorite Time of Year

Fall is without a doubt my favorite season. It starts to cool and turn crisp, especially in the morning, the leaves change color, the days end sooner. Pumpkins appear, signaling Halloween is just around the corner. There's change in the air.

I love it.

What else do I love? Pumpkin Spice Lattes! Oh, my goodness. I adore them. So far since they've come out at Starbucks, I've only had one. One I tell you. What a travesty! I must rectify this and soon.

Legacy

Steve Jobs has left behind such an important legacy that has touched everyone's lives. I am surrounded by Apple products - my iphone, my Macbook Air, my iTouch, my (not really, everyone else uses it but me) iPad, my daughter's iPod, not to mention all the Apple products my teenager owns...the list is endless.

What a visionary. I'm in awe of his drive, of his need to keep creating. He didn't let a thing like cancer stop him. He didn't let a thing like being rich beyond his wildest dreams make him lazy either. He couldn't not create and grow and change people's lives - it was in his blood. It's what he loved to do.

His death has really affected me. The words he said, the things he did, have inspired me. So I'll leave you with a few of my favorite Steve Jobs quotes:

“Are you going to stand over there all night or come closer?” Lanie’s sultry voice carried on the wind, and he watched as she settled her pert little ass on one of the wrought iron benches against the wall. She shivered, probably from making contact with the cold metal.

“Your wish is my command.” With a salute he went to the bench, settling beside her, their bodies smashed close together.

A soft little huff of laughter left her when he slipped his arm around her shoulders. “I didn’t think it would be this easy.”

“What would be this easy?”

“Talking to you.” She lifted her head, her gaze meeting his. Again, she was very direct, with no bullshit apparent. He found that characteristic arousing as well. “I haven’t seen you since the night in the closet. I thought you hated me.”

He chuckled. “The very last thing I feel for you is hate.”

“Oh really? What do you feel for me then?”

Unadulterated, instant attraction? Uncontrollable lust?

Just smelling her sweet, unique scent had him close enough to the edge as it was.

“I like you,” he admitted. The moment the simple words fell from his lips, he realized they didn’t even come close to encompassing exactly what he thought of her. What he felt for her.

She smiled, reached out and drew her finger down his cheek. “I like you too.”

The wind howled, as if in protest and she leaned in closer, her tequila-tinged breath wafting across his lips. He had a feeling she was a little buzzed, but he didn’t care. He’d put back a few beers, too, didn’t really have a buzz on but he certainly felt lust-drunk having her so near.

Lanie the pretty nurse who accosted him in a closet downright made his head spin.

Reaching out, he cupped her cheek, and then pushed his fingers into her hair. Silky soft, the strands wound around his fingers. Her eyes slid closed on a sigh. “It’s too damn cold to be out here.”

“Then we need to keep each other warm.” A wicked smile curved her lips when he pulled her close with his arm still around her shoulders. She draped her arm around his middle and beneath his flannel shirt, her fingers splayed across his stomach.

The wind blew like a bitch and the iron bench chilled his ass even through his jeans, but he forgot all about it when his lips connected with hers. Poof, all thought of nasty weather was gone. All he could concentrate on was the taste of her, the way her tongue danced with his, how her fingers slid beneath his shirt and touched the bare skin of his abdomen...

Ten Years Ago Today Part 2

Ignore the lady above - that is the very spot where my husband and I were married at Makena Beach in Maui.

It was a Saturday - the original day we planned to be married. Circumstances caused us to change plans and we were married on Sunday, September 30th. So the day before was spent getting the marriage license, meeting with the man who coordinated our little wedding ceremony.

Turns out his wife was from the same city as my husband. Talk about a small world.

psst - Jennifer Lopez got married the same weekend we did. To her second husband. They divorced a couple of years later. Now she's going to divorce her third husband. Poor JLo.

A large wedding--there's nothing like it. The grandeur, the guests, the food, the dress(!). I could go on and on. But an intimate, casual wedding on a beach at sunset is pretty awesome, I must confess. I'm so thankful we went the simple route, surrounded by family and a few friends.

Our friend just stopped by tonight--his daughter is getting married this Saturday. The man was talking a mile a minute, he said his wife has been in nonstop wedding mode and their daughter--the bride--just started nursing school a month ago. Talk about stressed. This wedding (which I know is going to be beautiful and I'm looking forward to it) is taking up their entire lives.

Our wedding? There wasn't much planning. Heck after we went over the ceremony plans, we went to the beach! You can't beat that.

I'm briefly documenting this because I don't want to forget how much fun it was. How happy and in love we were when we got married ten years ago. How happy and in love we are now. Even with all the trials and the ups and downs. The good times, the babies, the vacations, the job loss, the financial woes, the hard times--it's all been worth it. I don't regret a moment.

Here's to another ten years my love. And we really need to try and get back to Maui before we hit our twentieth anniversary, don't you think? *grins*

Ten Years Ago Today

I was on a plane with my husband-to-be and a few of our friends on our way to Maui. We drove to Los Angeles the night before, our friend's wife with us along for the ride. Her husband drove all the way to Arizona to drop off their four children with his parents for the week - then headed to L.A. to fly out with us in the morning (crazy!).

We stayed at a hotel close to LAX and watched the Friends premiere. It was when Monica and Chandler got married which I thought was fitting because our relationship mirrored theirs so much. They kept the relationship a secret--so did we. The time they got caught was around the same as we did. And so on and so forth...

What a way we got caught too (no, nothing dirty, get your minds out of the gutter). You see, we worked together. I was traveling for work and had a connector flight at LAX I almost missed. They held the plane for me and I ran across the tarmac with the flight attendant, hopped on the plane and there were three guys I worked with. All drunk (OMG), all screaming my name when I got on the plane. Very surreal.

My then-boyfriend was waiting for me at the airport to pick me up. When they saw him, they were like "uh huh". Busted. Ha ha.

We went to a wedding in Maui in 2000 and thought, "That's the way to get married." So we copied them. I was too stressed out to plan a wedding, I rationalized. I was doing online college courses, I worked full-time and we were having a house built. Too much going on, too much money we'd rather put toward our house anyway.

It was my second marriage, his first. I was 31, he was 29. We were flying a little over two weeks after the 9/11 tragedy so tensions were high at the airport and all procedures were so different. I remember sitting on the plane reading a Newsweek filled with nothing but 9/11 articles and quotes and I finally had to put the magazine away. Tears will falling down my face reading everything and I didn't want to freak myself out.

I was embarking on a new stage in my life. And I couldn't wait.

Sssh. I'm Writing

Well, I'm not writing on a cute little pink typewriter but that's okay. I think this photo is a fair representation.

But yes, I'm writing like crazy and I don't have time to blog much this week. I'm on deadline (book due October 1) and I'm also in the throes of my story. As in, my characters have me in a choke hold and they don't want to let me go. And rather than fight them, I'm going with it and getting out so many words I do a little victory dance at the end of the day. Go me.

Want a sample of what I'm working on (unedited so please forgive me for any errors)? Here you go:

Tessa froze, shocked at the sensation of Alex’s lips pressed against hers. They were soft, damp, there and gone before they settled upon hers once again. Longer this time, his mouth lingered on hers. His lips were parted and she felt his hot breath mingle with her own before he finally pulled away.

“W—why did you do that?” Her voice shook. She sounded like a complete ninny but she couldn’t believe it.

Alex just kissed her.

“I need you to be calm,” he murmured, his fingers drifting down her cheek before his hand fell away. “I need you to be confident. And more than anything, you need to pretend you’re with me. Just for tonight.”

That wouldn’t be a hardship. But still. She didn’t understand. He could have anyone and yet he chose her? “I don’t know how convincing we’ll be. I mean, you’re my boss. Up until a few days ago I couldn’t bring myself to call you by your first name. And now you want me to pretend that you’re my—boyfriend?”

She could not say the word lover. It was simply too intimate. Not that Alexander Worth could be considered anyone’s boyfriend. That was far too simple a word for such a complex man.

A couple swept by, the older man dashing in his tuxedo, the woman clad in royal blue and with sapphires the size of eggs around her neck and on her fingers. Tessa couldn’t help but stare as the man opened the ballroom door and allowed the woman to walk inside.

It gave Alex the advantage. He pulled Tessa in even closer, if that was possible. Her full skirts swirled around his legs, covering his feet and she braced herself, resting her hand against his hard chest, her fingers immediately curling into the soft, rich fabric of his jacket.

The man was gorgeous no matter what he wore. Tuxedo, suit, jeans…and she had a feeling he would be even more so in nothing at all.

“For one night I want you to pretend you belong to me, Tessa. No one else, just me.” He placed his hand on her cheek again, his fingers curving about her jaw, cradling her as if she were a delicate, fragile thing. “I don’t want you to look at another man, speak to another man unless I say or indicate that you can. You’re mine tonight. No one else’s.” The look in his gray-blue eyes was fierce, full of a fiery passion she’d never seen before.

She found she rather liked it.

She went behind him, going for the refrigerator and he turned around at the very moment she reached out with the salsa. Her hand went into his chest and the lid plopped off, spilling salsa down the front of his shirt.

“Oh, my God! Oh, I’m so sorry. I’m such a klutz. You must think I’m an imbecile.” She wiped at his T-shirt, drops of salsa falling onto the tile floor and he stood there, both bemused and aroused. His shirt was soaked and the spicy smell of the spices, tomatoes and onions filled his nostrils.

Morgan ran to the sink and grabbed a dry washcloth. Turning on the water, she ran it under the spigot, talking a mile a minute, apologizing again and again.

“I swear you always walk into trouble when you’re with me. Or I walk into trouble. This is so not good. I ruined your shirt, didn’t I?”

He didn’t bother answering. Tugging it up and off over his head, he rolled it into a soggy ball and set it on the island, then grabbed a napkin and wiped the dampness that seeped through off his skin. It was doubtful she had a shirt his size to wear for the rest of the evening.

Doubtful even more she’d feel comfortable with him sitting around bare-chested while they watched another movie.

“Let me clean you up.” She whirled around to face him, the wet washcloth clutched in her hand. Her eyes widened as she drank him in, her gaze wandering over his half naked state and yep, there it was. A flare of interest, a hint of simmering heat.

“Um.” Her hand fell, hanging limp at her side. The washcloth was so drenched it dripped water on the floor. “You, uh…you took off your shirt.”

“It was covered in salsa.”

She took a step toward him. “I’m sorry.”

Evan smiled. She looked ready to pounce on him. And if that was the case, he didn’t want her to apologize. “It’s no big deal.”

“I can wash it for you.” She waved a hand toward a doorway to the right. He saw the washer and dryer within the tiny space and figured it was the laundry room. “So you’ll have a shirt to wear when you leave.”

“How long will that take?”

Her gaze met his once more, her brown eyes wide and unfathomable. “Um, a couple of hours, tops.”

“I’ve got all night,” he drawled.

Her cheeks flushed and she came closer, reaching for the balled up T-shirt on the island. Her breasts brushed his bare arm, a fleeting touch that had him reacting in an instant. Hard cock, tight skin, heat flashing through his veins.

Curling his hand around her upper arm, he stopped her. She lifted her head, her eyes meeting his and he tugged her closer. “I don’t want to watch another movie,” he whispered.

She visibly swallowed. “What do you want to do?”

“Come here and I’ll show you.” Yeah, his patience was flying right out the window.

The washcloth fell to the floor with a loud plop and he grabbed her around the waist, lifting her so she sat on the edge of the island. She shrieked when he picked her up, her hands settling on his shoulders, fingers curling into his skin. He savored the caress, the way she felt in his arms.

If she didn’t watch it, he’d take her right where she sat. They were in perfect position and he could imagine his hands clutching the edge of the counter, his cock slamming into her again and again as she writhed naked on the cold, hard granite countertop…

Her lips parted and before she could utter a word he kissed her. Her lips were soft, hot and wet against his, and she tasted so damn good he gave a rough sound of pleasure when her tongue snuck into his mouth. He tightened his arms around her slender waist, his hands sprawled wide across her back and he tugged her closer. She slid toward him easily across the slick granite surface, and she shivered against him.

She wound her arms around his neck, her hands sinking into his hair. “I’ve wanted you to kiss me too.”

They’d wasted at least two hours when they could’ve been doing this from the start. “Did you spill the salsa on purpose?”

“No.” She tugged on his hair so he had no choice but to meet her gaze once more. “I would never do that. You must think I’m a complete idiot though.”

“Not at all.” He dropped a gentle kiss on her nose. “But it was a smart tactic.”

I'm doing something I've never done before - a character interview. But not just any regular ol' character interview (if there even is such a thing - how regular can it be, interviewing your characters? LOL). I'm going to allow Evan, the hero from Simple Twist of Fate, introduce you all to his friend and coworker, Wes.

You see, originally I planned the Fated series to be three linked novellas about three friends and the men they fall in love with. As I was writing Simple Twist of Fate, though, I needed to give Evan a partner at his job as a paramedic. So I created Wes.

And immediately wanted to give him a story.

You're done with the Fated series, I told myself. It's over. Wes doesn't need no stinkin' story.

"Oh, yes I do," he said, his voice firm,, a wicked twinkle in his eyes. I knew he was trying to charm me.

Like I could resist him. Yep, I'm weak. Besides, he's a bad boy who's cultivated the reputation. He's reveled in it really, but after watching his friend Evan stumble head over heels in love and actually like it, Wes can't help but feel a little envious...

Evan: Envious? Really Wes? I always thought you enjoyed bagging all the babes. *glances left, then right* Hope Morgan didn't hear that.

Wes: Wuss. And hell yeah, I enjoyed bagging all the babes but I'm getting too old for that, man. I wouldn't mind finding a woman--just one woman, no more endless stream of dates--and actually havw a relationship with her.

Evan: No kidding? You?

Wes: I can't believe I just admitted that...

Evan: No no, it's great. Listen, falling in love is the best thing that could ever happen to you. My relationship with Morgan...well, nothing is ever perfect but she's about as perfect as can be. At least in my eyes.

Wes (holds up hands in defensive gesture): Hey, hey. Whoa, there Nelly. I'm not looking to fall in love or anything. Hell, no. That's crazy talk.

Evan (raises an eyebrow): Don't be scared.

Wes: I'm not scared. You're the wuss who's afraid to offend your girlfriend.

Evan (doing his best to ignore Wes): Then what's your problem?

Wes: I'm just not looking for anything serious. I'm talking a semi-relationship where you steadily see someone, hang out, have fun. I'm not ready for marriage.

Evan: No one mentioned marriage, Wes. Just you.

Wes: Right. As in, no thanks, I'll pass. I like my life, I like my freedom. Spending time with a nice girl sounds ideal. I'm sick of boinking bimbos.

Evan: Nice, bro. Real nice.

Wes (wincing): Sorry. You know what I mean.

Evan: You're hopeless, man.

I agree - Wes is hopeless. Wait until he meets Lanie. She gives him a run for his money. Next thing you know, he's tripping over his feet trying to be with her. He's the one who falls first, and what a ride I take them on...

I'm going to self-publish Wes and Lanie's story sometime in September (title forthcoming) so watch for it! And watch Wes make a few minor appearances in Simple Twist of Fate!

I first got the idea for the Fated series via a magazine article I was reading one day about couples and how they met in unusual ways -- and fell in love instantly. Four real life couples were featured and I remember reading those quick little stories about how they met and thinking, "Hmm...that's a great idea for a series. Stumbling upon the one meant for you when you're not looking."

Description & Setting

I'm going to be writerly today. After spending the weekend re-reading a favorite Nora Roberts book (Dance Upon the Air, first in the Three Sisters Island trilogy) - and if you're hanging out with me on my Facebook page then you already know this - I realized again just how awesome a writer Nora is.

Why is she so awesome (oh, let us count the many ways)? She can take two sentences. A measly two sentences, and describe the scene perfectly. To the point that I'm there, I'm living and breathing it and damn it, I want to hang out at Cafe Book and eat a delicious lunch made by Nell. I want to be on that island smelling the salt air and eating an ice cream as I cruise through the little village and hopefully, eventually, make it down to the beach where I can feel the warm sand beneath my bare feet.

Here's an example:

"...Nell followed her through the back exit and into a small garden paved with stepping-stones. A huge black cat sunned itself on one of them and blinked open one luminous gold eye as Mia stepped nimbly over."

Ah, I can totally see the cat and the little garden. How about you?

I am full of envy after reading this book. And not the bad sort of envy either. No, more like the "Damn, I really need to work on my descriptions" sort of envy. The inspiring kind, that makes me want to be a better writer and tighten up those sentences I've been laboring over recently.

I will confess I can be wordy (editors of mine will agree I'm sure). Oh, I love a good, long, rambling sentence (my editors are thinking shoot me). But I feel like I don't get enough description in my books. That's something I'd like to work on. Reading Nora was like a lesson in proper description - at least for me.

So I'm looking for opinions and suggestions. What's your take on setting description in books? Do you like it short and concise? Long and flowery with endless details (I'm afraid I skim and skip when I encounter too much description. Oy, there's such a fine line - it's a true skill to balance it)?

Also - are there any writers out there you adore who is highly skilled at description? I'm telling you, there's nothing better than losing yourself in a book - as if you're living it. I know all the hardcore readers out there will agree. Share with me writers you absolutely cannot do without. Writers who leave you wanting more, who are just so damn talented you can't get over how real that felt...

I'd love to hear your opinions. Pretty please.

Whirling her around, he removed her shift, and she kicked off her drawers until she was naked. His eyes flared with heat, drinking her in languidly. He lifted his head, and those hot eyes met hers as he curled his hands around her shoulders and walked her backward. With one push, she fell onto the bed with a surprised cry.

His gaze focused on the spot between her legs, and despite her recent boldness, she covered herself with her hand. He shook his head and dropped to his knees, gripping her about the waist and drawing her close so she hung on the edge of the mattress with his face directly in front of her hot center.

“Wh-what are you doing?” He removed her hand and spread her thighs wide, putting her on display. Her cheeks heated. Had her husband ever looked at her in such a manner? Certainly not. She felt so completely exposed that she became increasingly uncomfortable with every second that passed.

“Looking at you.” His voice was rough. He breathed deeply, closing his eyes for the briefest moment before reopening them to pin her where she lay. “I can smell you."

She turned her head, fighting the mortification that wanted to take over. She shouldn’t be embarrassed by her body’s reaction to him. She should embrace it,
revel in it and, most of all, learn from it. Their affair would be short, and what if she wanted to take another lover upon his departure?

No. She couldn’t imagine taking another lover. Bedingfield was the only one she desired. One tryst in the carriage and he mastered her body. She quivered in anticipation of what he would do next.

My New Crush

I had no idea I would love such a savage, tongue-ripping (if you watch the series, you'll know what I'm talking about) beast like Drago but...I do! I heart him! And we're not even going to talk about Sunday's episode of Game of Thrones okay? Let's remember the good times.

Jason Momoa, where have you been all my life? Okay, okay, I've heard of you but I never paid you any mind. I remember thinking Lisa Bonet scored when I saw them together but other than that, I ignored you.

Well, I'm not ignoring you any longer, you mean, nasty, sexy warrior! Who shows his soft side for the woman he loves and adores.

And we can watch him later this summer when he plays Conan the Barbarian on the big screen. Now, I didn't bother to watch the first version with Arnold (looked dumb - and I was pretty young when it came out so...yeah, for me to think it looked dumb, not a good sign), but I just might consider going to see Jason's version of Conan because, well, look at him.

There is so much going on this month, it's a bit overwhelming. But I'm not complaining. Being busy is a good thing. A very good thing...

Wow, it’s hard to believe that a whole year has already passed since the launch of Carina Press! I’m sure the entire Carina Press team is feeling amazed at how fast a year goes by!

I was first introduced to Carina Press when we were launching the email program. Then I was given the opportunity to manage the merchandising and promotions on the website. I knew that Carina Press featured great reads that cover a wide variety of genres. But that was the extent of my knowledge at the time. And let me say, there’s never been a dull moment since!

When I first took over the duties, I remember thinking “How different can this be to planning and merchandising for Harlequin.com?” I found out quickly that Carina Press is different and unique!

Sure, I can still use my usual work jargon when reviewing creative or merchandising for the site. At Carina Press, comments like “This creative is not sexy or steamy enough! We need more shirtless men! Wait…we need more shirtless COWBOYS!” still apply. But there’s so much more to Carina Press editorial.

Finally, my “It’s Raining Men” promotion makes sense featuring male/male editorial. And it was such fun to celebrate the breadth of reading genres in our “Reading Adventure” promotion (it looked a lot like an Indiana Jones adventure!) I was introduced to a world of exciting new-to-me genres, including Urban Fantasy, Space Opera and Steampunk (I admit having to look that one up on Wikipedia!) The reading possibilities are endless!

So I’d like to lift my virtual glass of champagne (I seriously could use a real one right now) and tip my hat – er, glass – to all the amazing talent on the Carina Press team! Here’s to another year (or 20) of great reading!

Historical romance author Ashley March posted an article about the Facebook contest rules on her blog yesterday and it's caused a whirlwind of discussion and worry. And in order to be compliant with Facebook's rules, I'm going to discuss the contest and what changes I need to make here on my blog.

First off, I can state that once I reach 500 followers on my Facebook page, I will give away a $25 gift card to Barnes & Noble or Amazon (winner's choice) AND an e-ARC of my book Notorious (which doesn't release from Samhain until June 28th). I'm not saying you must like my Facebook page to enter - merely that once we reach 500 likes, the giveaway is happening and a winner will be drawn -- and announced here on the blog.

Regardless of whether I reach 1,000 followers by June 20th (it's merely a goal, it always has been) or not, I am most definitely giving away a KINDLE to one lucky winner. Other ways to enter the contest are listed on my contest page here. The drawing for the Kindle will be held on June 21st.
